Imam al-Ghazali's advice to a student, entitled "O Child" (Ayyuha 'l-walad), is among the works of world literature and, at the same time, an impressive example of oriental pedagogy. The Arabic text was first translated into German by Josef von Hammer-Purgstall and published in a bilingual edition in Vienna in 1838. In addition to linguistic improvements, this edition has other advantages over previous versions. Although al-Ghazali's ethical treatise may be small in scope, its significance cannot be overestimated. It has been widely interpreted and commented on, and has become the subject of pedagogical research. UNESCO has published this work in various languages as part of its series of masterpieces of world literature. Abu Hamid al-Ghazali
